We want to put more control into the hands of the artists.
Often in the past year our coverage of various shows and exhibits was reduced to photos of the many with very little space left for commentary and insight from the artists. We want to change that by giving our artists space to tell their own stories and room to show some of their efforts.
Here’s how the system works:
We are offering space to any creative artist (This includes cartoonists, filmmakers, songwriters, musicians and performance artists) wishing to display their art and give some explanation about it. This may include a description of the creative process, possibly where the work is currently available, price and other pertinent data such as upcoming plans. This could be particularly effective if the chosen work is on display in a show or gallery. The space will be enough for two jpegs of the works and about a 100 word description. Ideally, this can be another tool in the artist’s marketing kit. Updating will be the responsibility of the artist. We reserve the right to edit submissions. There is no charge for this.
To get involved in the Artist Space send an email with the two jpegs of the art selected and your own descriptive paragraph to honoluluartsbeat@me.com with the subject line “Artist Space” in the heading.

Persistence seems to be an ongoing theme running through our creative community. Despite the gloom and doom voiced against the background noise from Washington regarding an economic recovery, or lack thereof, our art world keeps buzzing along.
September’s First Friday saw crowds of people in attendance at HISAM and packing the galleries throughout the Arts District.
We witnessed some sales being made during our making the rounds. Whether there was enough sales to call it a turn for the better remains to be seen.
The enthusiasm was there in the crowds and the confidence was evident in the artists and performers. Blending all of the above with a beautiful tropical night made September’s First Friday a most pleasant one.

Arts Beaters: Let’s help this guy get connected:
Hi Folks:
Forgive me for using this address to make contact, but during the period September 2 to Sept 12 I will be in Honolulu. I am curious if there are any short term art seminars, workshops or courses during that time frame. As an amateur artist I would like to expand my horizons. I am travelling from arctic Canada with my wife. She will be attending a conference and I will not, so I have that period of time available. I am interested in doing landscape sketching, figure drawing and general illustration. Some samples are attached. If you can recommend, or put me in touch with any group, organization or individual, it would be greatly appreciated.
With regards
Paddy

Aloha Eveyone,
Well the 41st Annual Contemporary Show is almost here. I hope everyone is as excited as I am. Lisa Yoshihara is going to be a great juror for us this year. We don't have Paul Staub or Priscilla this year to help hang and register and I have use of only one hand due to recent Carpel Tunnel surgery which is not healing very fast. It always turns out we have enough help but if you did help hang and or register the Aloha Show this year can you please all help do the same for this show our last of the year. If you didn't help we can always use you. Don't forget to have all your entry forms filled out and your labels on your paintings. This will prevent a bottle neck of people trying to find room to do it all there. I look forward to seeing you all and your new work, and don't foget your hammers!
Mahalo,
Tony Randall

Thank you Jane,
We consider ourselves lucky to be working with the talented people in our ohana like you who always seem to go the distance and more in order to make the art world happen -- big time-- in Hawaii. RP
Aloha,
KAUPA is continuing to spread the word about our art education workshops led by Kumu Melanna Meyer, and assisted by Solomon Enos, John "Prime" Hina, and Kahi Ching. Two workshops have passed, but we are encouraging others to still join us for the three remaining dates - September 4, 11, and 25.
These workshops will culminate in the painting of a mural along the stream at Kalihi Waena.
Please see the attached flyer, and we appreciate your spreading the word!
Mahalo,
Barbara
