From The Editor

We want to put more control into the hands of the artists.

Often in the past year our coverage of various shows and exhibits was reduced to photos of the many with very little space left for commentary and insight from the artists.  We want to change that by giving our artists space to tell their own stories and room to show some of their efforts.

Here’s how the system works:

We are offering space to any creative artist (This includes cartoonists, filmmakers, songwriters, musicians and performance artists) wishing to display their art and give some explanation about it. This may include a description of the creative process, possibly where the work is currently available, price and other pertinent data such as upcoming plans. This could be particularly effective if the chosen work is on display in a show or gallery. The space will be enough for two jpegs of the works and about a 100 word description. Ideally, this can be another tool in the artist’s marketing kit. Updating will be the responsibility of the artist. We reserve the right to edit submissions. There is no charge for this.

To get involved in the Artist Space send an email with the two jpegs of the art selected and your own descriptive paragraph to honoluluartsbeat@me.com with the subject line “Artist Space” in the heading.

“Aloha, Ray and Julia

The AHA would like to make a donation of $100 to the cause. We don't have a charge card though so we'll have to mail you a check. Would you send me the mailing address? I looked on the website but couldn't see it.”

Thanks,

Priscilla Hall

“Love it Ray, You and Julia are the best! we're lucky to have the two of you. It is a lot of work!

“Ray,

I'd like to make a donation. I just sent in a $500 donation on my C. card.  It is important to keep you going.”

The above letters are a sampling of some of the response to our  message below, which many of our readers have received via email.

Some of the other donors to Honolulu Arts Beat have chosen to remain anonymous. We can tell you they include a well-known designer who gave $100, a plein air artist who donated $25 and another artist who gave us a welcome $10 to keep us going and hopefully growing. Mahalo from the heart to all.

Some may wonder where the money gets spent. One example is our recent purchase  of a two terrabyte G Drive, a large hard drive to handle all the photos and videos generated from our coverage of this ever-growing creative ohana of ours. That was $366.44.

Other recent expenditures deal with website maintenance, domain registrations, rechargeable batteries (from Canon at $190.00 apiece) for HD Cams. Of course there’s the  exotic executive lunches, usually eaten out of a paper bag while we’re driving  to an art related story and trying not to spill Starbucks’ best all over our  three-year old Nissan.

As most of you are aware Honolulu Arts Beat does not charge for any local promotions of the arts. All the listings, in-depth coverage, videos and commentary are published without charge. Our only revenue stream has been from online advertisers supplied by Google and other web ad providers. From our premier on May 1, 2009, to present our yield from this advertising has been about $110 -- a far cry from balancing books. Needless to say the brunt has been absorbed by Julia and me.

It is not our desire to run around with a rate card and gather local advertising. We never wanted Honolulu Arts Beat to be the exclusive property of those who could buy their way in. Honolulu Arts Beat should be open to the creative spirits who inhabit our isles, regardless of how much or how little their bank account may be.

Take a moment to check us out on IndieGoGo and also share it with your friends.   If enough of us get involved, we can make 'Honolulu Arts Beat  continue to grow and serve the needs and aspirations of  Hawaii's' creative community.

Donations Update:

Three of our most recent donations to Honolulu Arts Beat to keep the Beat going and growing have come from painters.

One is internationally shown painter/printmaker George Woollard who also teaches art at Linekona.

Another  is a well-known woman painter who often works in watercolor and is shown frequently in WAG shows and in shows at the Honolulu Country Club.

The third is a woman painter who also shows in WAG shows and whose work has been featured in local galleries including Fishcakes.

Each of the three have donated $100 to Honolulu Arts Beat to keep the Beat going and growing.

A Huge Mahalo to all three!

Wonderful Letter, Nice Donation

Dear Julia and Ray,

Thank you for your hard work with Honolulu Arts Beat. It is such a valuable tool for the entire community. It is so nice to be able to match a name ( with a face) to a piece of work. Keep up the good work. We value your service.

With Aloha,

Suzi and Stan

Susan Stuart- Wilson and husband Stan Wilson are valuable members of our  arts ohana. Susan’s latest work can be seen in the WAG show at Pauahi Tower. Stan (One of Honolulu’s Finest) had a recent stint as bartender extraordinaire at Bobbie Sakae’s opening at Gallery on the Pali. Their enclosed check of $100 is a big help toward making Honolulu Arts Beat keep going and growing. A Big Mahalo to both! RP

One Nuddah Guy Give, Yeah

Hi Ray,

I have 4 paintings in the AHA "Spring Fever" Show currently at the Honolulu Country Club (Public Opening Reception: March 14, 5-7pm) and also a small painting "We Are All Made of Stars (Moby)" in the current exhibit at ARTS at Marks show "Command-Option-Escape" (opens First Friday, Apr.5).

By the way, I just made small contribution to Arts Beat. The site is wonderful, very impressive, getting better all the time and a true and nourishing contribution to local art, artists and arts community. Mahalo.

Would love to show you some videos and pictures and talk story.

Aloha,

David Friedman

Thank you David for your kind comments and thank you also for your contribution of $50 to the Honolulu Arts Beat. A big Mahalo all around. RP
